I do not live in New York (anymore), but I am there every few months or so and was thinking it would be cool if we could get a list going of some of our favourite vegetarian and veggie-friendly restaurants in the city...
I love Kate's Corner (Joint, Place, whatever she calls it nowadays) on E. 4th St and Ave B.
Of course there is Zen Palate at Union Sqaure and on 44th St and 8th Ave (is that right around 44th at least).
I love Vegetarian's Paradise on W.4th st. and 6th Ave. (and the one in Chinatown that is no longer affiliated on Mott St. I think).
There are many others: the Veggie Diner on 14th St & 6th Ave., Hangawi in the east 30's somewhere, etc.
Anyway, I would love to hear about some others to try when I am in New York in February.

Re: New York restaurants
Mon, January 19, 2004 - 9:10 PMis veggie castle that place in flatbush, that used to be a burger king or something, that has all kindsa interesting west indies/caribbean foods? that place is awesome!
hangawi is great too.. its on 32nd between 5th and 6th, i believe.
I love Galaxy Global Eatery, next to Irving Plaza.. they have meat, but its all about the buffalo seitan medallions, and the whispy sweet potato fries.
Guru, an indian place on e 6th, that used to be all veg but now has meat, but the veg menu is still HUGE.
Harry's Burritos rocks.. their 3-Grain veg burrito is so good, especially when you order mole on the side. And cheap margaritas during happy hour!
burritoville is good too.. they own veg city diner (but don't get the burrito at veg-city.. i did, and quite frankly i dont think i can go back there, it was so bad). They have a great Rodeo Tempeh burrito that's not listed on the menu, sometimes up on the specials board. So good. And Soy Churitzo, when you're craving the TVP. -

Re: New York restaurants
Tue, January 20, 2004 - 5:43 AMOh I love Burritoville. Since I moved away from New York I constantly crave the veggie chorizo burrito. I have it every time I am back in NYC. I also forgot a vegan restaurant that I love it is on Allen Street and Stanton Street, on the lower east side... it is called Tiengarden. I used to live less than a block from there and would eat there at least once a week and never gor tired of it. But it seemed like they never really had any business, so I really hope that they don't ever have to close... -

Re: New York restaurants
Tue, January 20, 2004 - 9:22 AMi've been eyeing that place!
That little extension of 1st ave, 2 blocks south of houston, is in a nether region, basically. I worked a bunch at Dish recently, across the street, and was talking to the owner about how there's no foot traffic there. Tiengarden must get slightly more foot traffic, for those walking from the subway into the LES area, where there's a ton of bars and cheap restaurants (I should have mentioned San Loco above, too.. $3 for a filling bean loco, $5 for their awesome salad!), galleries and little rock clubs.
Someday i'll actually go in there, but for now i've been intrigued for more. Helps that you've promoted it. -

Re: New York restaurants
Thu, April 22, 2004 - 1:26 PMvegetarian dim sum house . 24 Pell Street in chinatown
www.vegetariandshouse.com/
excellent place to eat dim sum -- all vegetarian. one of my favourite
restaurants in new york. i love the "monk's dumpling" and the
"taro treasure boxes".
red bamboo . 140 w. 4th (near 6th ave -- next to VP2)
www.redbamboo-nyc.com/
on the more expensive side (try the lunch specials!). i love
the "creole soul chicken sandwich". i asked the waitress 3x if
she was *sure* it wasn't meat.
house of vegetarian . 68 Mott St (chinatown)
i believe this place has the same owner as the vegetarian dim
sum house. try their "fried noodle with spicy beancurd" -
